Plus of course, have her greatly benefit from some of the other powerful advantages XYplorer provides, and introduce others over time.īut now comes the problem with the blocking search. In other words, reduce her entropy and complexity FROM multiple windows, multiple trees, multiple list views, TO just one XYplorer window, one tree and a small set of fixed tabs.

(Right now the tabs are rooted at two main top-level folders on one partition, another top-level folder on the other partition, Desktop, Computer, and a default tab.) Now, my idea was that XYplorer would address this issue by constraining her to one fixed window, with a set of predefined locked home zone tabs, and the Mini Tree, along with a custom toolbar and no main menu. She also starts up new ones when she does a search on the current window and needs to do something else with Explorer.

When she used Windows Explorer, she'd end up with multiple windows all the time, having to always locate which one was the window she was last on (because she's always clearing her desktop of clutter), and usually starting yet another one. Jerry wrote:But the issue of the blocking during any search is a potential showstopper for her I fear. Why? What's the problem? Because she'll end up always having 2 windows open (even more) with trees and tabs out sync with each other. I'm curious myself whether Don would consider backgrounding search, although I'm not aware of many complaints like yours currently (the ancient "two fools-rule"). I don't think such a move would help with the first limitation, though.įile operations are backgrounded to a separate process (XYcopy.exe), with some suggestion in the past that thumbnail-creation might be backgrounded similarly. no ability to create a 64-bit version, as discussed in many other threads and with a possible solution by changing to a third-party VB-compiler. no *usable* multi-threading, causing this thread Ģ. Unfortunately, that brings along two inabilities:ġ. Why can't the search be optionally backgrounded like other file operations?Īs you probably know, XYplorer is written in VB 6, which isn't the most current of Microsoft technologies. Well, XYplorer is so above and beyond anything else out there that I'm not sure that precedent is a compelling argument! J_c_hallgren wrote:Maybe there are FM's that do this but I'm not aware of any that multitask in this way.but then I'm coming from an era when even decent sized computers were single thread.or looking at it another way, can you search for photos in a photo editor while editing a pix also? I doubt it so why expect a FM to do it.just my opinion. But the issue of the blocking during any search is a potential showstopper for her I fear. I have her search set up to always put the search results in a new tab, which is good. One of the major reasons for her to use XYplorer is to avoid multiple Explorer windows and just use a fixed set of locked home zone tabs in one window. Having to open another instance of XYplorer is exactly the kind of thing she doesn't need. Favorite files and folders will help to some extent, but too often not. She has to use search all the time to find her stuff because her file organization skills and memory are quite impaired. This is the case with my ADD friend who I'm introducing the XYplorer. Not having the search be multitasking with everything else is quite a problem when all your searches are done on a network drive usually at the root of the drive and thus, takes very long to finish.

But then, how do you sync up the two instances with regard to visible tree (Mini Tree), tabs views, configuration, etc?

I know I can run multiple instances of XYplorer and the solution would be to open another instance to do the other activities while the search is running in the other instance. (phpBB search function leaves a lot to be desired.) If there is a post that addresses this issue, kindly point me to it with a link. I don't recall the reason why the search scan has to block all other activity in XYplorer when using just a single instance.
